Typical

Monday, 31 July 2006

After all these weeks of glorious weather and sweltering in the office, what happens when I get to take a few days off? Yep, it has poured with rain all day, so hard at one point that the pergola threatened to collapse under the weight of water and had to be hurriedly disassembled. But if the weather prevented any trips out, it did let me concentrate two things I’ve been focussed on lately, Titan Quest and my book, Panic, by Jeff Abbott and both are recommended.

Life’s Little Irritants No. 12

Thursday, 27 July 2006

Actually, not so much an irritant, more of a question — why have we become so inconsistent when talking about the year? For example: Norman the Conqueror landed on our shores in ten sixty-six. Columbus discovered America in fourteen ninety-two.

One to Try at Home

Tuesday, 25 July 2006

Well, another postless week. I could blame lots of things, but I know what is at the bottom of it — stress. We’re going through yet another reorganisation and even though I do a good job and that my new boss does too, amid all the uncertainty there is the nagging doubt that there won’t be any chairs left when the music stops. Not a good thought when I’ve still two kids to (hopefully) fund through university. The thing is, when this has happened in the past (several times) I [...]

Growing Up

Wednesday, 19 July 2006

No posts for nearly a week. That must be record for me keeping my trap shut. All my spare time has been taken up with playing the recently released Titan Quest game, the follow-up to the excellent Diablo series and it has proved thoroughly addictive, not just for me but also my son, so when I do have some free time, I can’t get near the PC to log any posts for his hulking frame.

It may be apocryphal, but I rather hope it isn’t:

Those that can’t…

Wednesday, 12 July 2006

Knowing that at least two of my readers are teachers, I have to tread carefully here so as not to cause offence. I’m sure that they at least are a credit to their profession, but it has to be said that the staff at my son’s school are completely and mind-bogglingly fucking useless. In blog as in life, I’m not one to revert to industrial language, preferring to keep it in reserve for its shock value, so you can guess that I am less than happy with this particular branch [...]

The Italian Job

Monday, 10 July 2006

Couldn’t resist this screenshot from the Daily Mail website — the cure for male infertility is to get stuck into an Italian. Would have been funnier had it been a cure for male baldness.

French Connection

Sunday, 9 July 2006

Have you noticed that Paul O’Grady is moonlighting as the French team manager? I mean, you never see them in the technical area at the same time do you?

Lost in the Labyrinth

Saturday, 8 July 2006

I finally finished Labyrinth by Kate Mosse today. “Blimey!” I can hear the observant reader say, “That took you long enough.” Well as I said at the time, I had plenty of things to distract me and when I got halfway through its 700 pages I did take a break for a week.
