When I saw the headline “Mandarins ‘cut liver cancer risk'” for one mad moment I thought that at last, the actions of senior civil servants had done something to improve health. Sadly no. It’s the fruit. Seems that the vitamin A compounds called carotenoids which give the fruit its orange colour lower the risk of liver disease, hardened arteries and insulin resistance.
Which is a shame really as it was the Mandarins who drew up the Choosing Health policy that is meant to make us all lighter, less smokey, more muscled, paler and more interesting and less likely to get the pox, but no, the money has been blown with not a flicker that anything has changed. Which is an even greater shame.
