Down, Down, Deeper and Down

Friday, 30 September 2011

After visiting the Sculpture Park on Tuesday, I also popped over to the National Mining Museum which is only a few miles away. I have been there several times before, but I regard it as something of a pilgrimage into my family’s past.

A Grand Day Out

Thursday, 29 September 2011

As I mentioned on Tuesday, the weather has been glorious — about the only glimpse of summer we’ve had this year — that I set all other plans aside and took myself out for the day. I’ve been meaning to visit the Yorkshire Sculpture Park for a very long time and never got round to it. It was reading Yorkie’s post on the subject last month that reminded me of what I might be missing.

K is for Kirstenbosch, Kid of Doom and Klein Karoo

Wednesday, 28 September 2011

Can I complete the whole of Round 9 of ABC Wednesday based on our four week stay in South Africa in February? Click on the photos to enlarge. K can be one of the tricky letters to fill for ABC Wednesday, but I was actually spoilt for choice in South Africa. For example, I would have liked to have written about Kipling who was an annual summer visitor to Cape Town. Then there is the Kudu, the ubiquitous African antelope that tastes delicious! Or the beautiful town of Knysna where [...]

She-Devil

Tuesday, 27 September 2011

The good weather has finally arrived and I’m leaving shortly to see what photos I can get while the sun shines and the sky is blue. So just a quick post about Amanda Knox, described as a ‘she-devil’ by a lawyer in Italy. The accompanying photo suggests otherwise, doesn’t it? Nice halo!

How Beautifully Leaves Grow Old

Monday, 26 September 2011

The signs are all around us that the seasons are turning. Left is a water filled leaf, one of many I came across this morning as I took advantage of the good weather to stroll through the Moravian Settlement in Droylsden. Not to mention the kids being back at school. It felt a little like that this morning as our daughter prepared for her first day at Manchester University where she will be studying for her MA in TEFL.

Faking It

Saturday, 24 September 2011

When I was looking back at my posts about jokes yesterday, included was this one from 2004 when the Mirror got itself in terrible trouble for publishing faked photos of the supposed torture of Iraqi prisoners. The unintended consequence of this incident was that the sacked Piers Morgan was released on an unsuspecting world to follow his smug television career, but a precedent had been set — that an editor could lose his job for publishing fake photos.

Gagging for It

Friday, 23 September 2011

Last weekend, Wartime Housewife posted this joke. It’s one I’d read before, but it still made me smile. ‘Read’ is the operative word in that last sentence. It’s not the sort of joke I’d expect to tell or be told because I suspect that most of us would run out of nationalities if trying to re-tell it in front of an audience.

Food for Thought

Thursday, 22 September 2011

McDonalds latest special is the 1955 Burger, ‘a tribute to where it all began’ apparently and advertised with modern day scenes of life in the UK that transform into homely images of 1950s American suburbia. The burger is comprised of: ‘A 100% beef patty with caramelised onions, lettuce, tomato, bacon, seasoned tomato sauce and our special smoky sauce in a sesame seeded bun.’

J is for Just Nuisance RN

Wednesday, 21 September 2011

Can I complete the whole of Round 9 of ABC Wednesday based on our four week stay in South Africa in February? Click on the photos to enlarge. After my ABC post about Bondi the Bulldog, yet another bronze statue of a nautical canine, this time Just Nuisance RN to be found at Simons Town. Just Nuisance was a Great Dane and the only dog ever to be officially enlisted in the Royal Navy, serving on HMS Afrikander  from 1939 to 1944.
