Fallen Archers

The-Archer-BBCIf you’re anything like me, there will be days when you’re scratching around for something original to fill up your blog pages, then all of a sudden inspiration will strike from the most innocuous source.

It happened to me the other day as I was driving and listening to the podcast of the Archers omnibus and it occurred to me that I hadn’t made any mention of the ongoing Rob and Helen Titchener drama.

For those who don’t follow or have even heard of the Archers (and I’m guessing that most of you), this is the original soap opera that has been on our radio since 1950, fifteen minutes a day, six days a week. Billed as ‘an everyday story of country folk’, it has a special place in this blogger’s heart.

The storyline that has been gripping me for months is one of the psychological abuse by Rob Titchener and his wife Helen. We knew from previous episodes that Rob was a wrong ‘un (he cheated at cricket for goodness sake) but his controlling behaviour and gradual undermining of Helen’s confidence has been a real slow-burner, making her doubt herself and her sanity subtly over many episodes.

I believe that only good radio drama can do this believably. Tv soaps would have to cut to the chase much sooner and deliver the adrenalin of the denouement in clear shades of black and white, whereas radio builds it slowly with creeping menace that is far more believable.

Anyway, there was me thinking I had something to write about and bang, the whole thing is all over the media, in the Telegraph, the Express, the Guardian, the Independent, and even on the One Show the other night.

So there isn’t much left for me say, except to agree with the Indie review that it is truly ‘subtle, clever and creepy’. The whole business is supposed to reach a climax over the next month or so – and I can’t wait.

I don’t follows “The Archers” but Shirley is a big fan and often listens to the programme while lying naked in the bath… Hey, no dirty thoughts you!

Certainly not. The thought of Shirley lying in the bath fully-clothed would be more bizarre!

Coming from a generation that was raised on “steam” radio, I have to accept that for the vast majority, radio is now merely something that gets put on in the car and then it is usually some godawful caterwauling character who couldn’t sing his, or her, way out of a paper bag. Consequently, radio programmes like “The Archers” must seem as foreign to them as the rest of us having to listen to the latest pop “guff.” Such is life.

Chill out Trevor! I think you need an oil massage from a nubile young lady called Siobhan or Keeley.

It’s Radio Four Extra for me every time. Or have they started spelling it Xtra? The Halifzx has a lot to answer for.
