Shot: Spanish photographer Mario Cea’s shot of a kingfisher as it is about to enter the water rightly won him Wildlife Photographer of the Year. ‘The Blue Trail’ took him five months and 5,000 attempts to capture. Definitely worth enlarging.
Cutting edge: A 27-foot sculpture made out of 100,000 knives could be placed on the fourth plinth in London’s Trafalgar Square in tribute to victims of knife crime. The Knife Angel is made out of the 10,000 knives handed in to police forces across the UK and took two years to make.
Flotsam and eggsam: Last week I reported the death of Kinder Egg supremo William Salice. News that thousands of the egg-based confectionery have washed up on a German beach couldn’t be a coincidence surely.
Word of the year: For the Oxford Dictionaries it was ‘post-truth’ which is the epitome of brevity compared to Austria’s word of the year: ‘Bundespräsidentenstichwahlwiederholungsverschiebung’. Those 51 letters translate as ‘postponement of the repeat of the runoff of the presidential election’.
No Wonder Woman: There is one less woman in politics after Wonder Woman was sacked as an honorary UN ambassador.
