One of the things I’ve noticed recently is the growing number of cars sporting the flag of St George, not just window or bumper stickers, but actual flags clamped to the window. This isn’t a sudden burst of blind nationalism, but a sign that the Euro 2004 merchandisers are already in full pursuit of our loot.
Actually, I think it is quite a healthy sign that we are regaining this national symbol. For too long, the English flag has been synonymous with far right politics, racism and thuggery and displaying it became uncomfortable. We should never have let it be stolen from us, and perhaps its reappearance signifies a growing confidence and pride in our nationality, as opposed to our nationalism. Let’s hope George is home for good.
