FIFA president, Sepp Blatter, isn’t generally considered the voice of reason in football (such as in his plan to ban games ending in a draw) but I heard him on Radio 5 this morning saying that he and FIFA would have supported the England team had they walked off the pitch on Wednesday in protest at the racial chanting in the Bernabeu.
But that is easy to say after the event. England didn’t walk off the pitch and even if they had, the repercussions would not have been too great as it was only a friendly. The question is, what would Blatter’s view be if this happened in a competitive match? FIFA should make Spain play their next three world cup qualifiers behind closed doors.
But I’m not holding my breath. Interesting that the Blogger spellchecker wanted to replace ‘Sepp Blatter’ with ‘Spew Blather.’
