Friends Reunited

I dropped my subscription a while ago on the grounds that interesting though it was to read about what people I was at school with had done since, I couldn’t actually remember who most of them were. Then a few weeks ago I received an email from a lad I didn’t know from school, so I coughed up my seven pound fifty to re-sub so that I could reply.

Two days later and another email arrived from a mutual friend, someone I did go to school with but best remembered as one of the lads I went on the razz with in my late teens and 20s. I assumed that the two emails were connected, that friend one had told friend two, but no, it was pure happenstance. It was too much to ignore and the three of us, plus a fourth comrade got together for a drink tonight.

I won’t bore you with the details. Reminiscences can be awfully dull, especially if you weren’t there. But it does offer a sociological insight to our generation. Here goes. Of the four of us:

  • Two have the same hairstyle as the last time we met 20 years ago (although we all have hair) and two are different.
  • Three have been married for 20 years plus. One is about to marry wife three.
  • Two have chequered careers, one slightly chequered before buckling down and getting on with it and the last stuck with the same firm and is with it still.
  • All of us looked to be about the same weight, bar one who had put on a pound or two. Nothing excessive, but definitely a bit of a spread.
  • Two have stayed close to where they grew up, while two have moved away, one to Blackpool, the other to Telford.
  • We all have children and three are grandparents.
  • We all have memories, it’s just that we parked them some time at the age of 25.
  • We all still enjoy a beer and shooting the breeze.

As a straw poll that’s a pretty small sample, about one piece of straw probably, and I draw no conclusions.

Other than that we must do it again so, though without wives in attendance I suspect. Too much information.

Ooop! Corrected. Blame it on the beer.

    Happenstance is a glorious word.
