F is for Fish

My ABC Wednesday post is inspired by this photo which appeared on my daughter’s Facebook page last week — F is for Fish!

It was taken at the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town where she is teaching at the moment. The name obviously honours the Atlantic and Indian Oceans which meet at the Cape. They had a pool where you could touch starfish, sea urchins, sponges, and other furry things that she couldn’t remember having been too busy taking photos.

So, how about some more fish? I could talk about Two Tone, the 67lb 14oz carp who sadly died last week thought to be between 40 and 45 years old. Or perhaps the seven foot blue shark caught by eleven year old Tom Baslington off the coast of Cornwall last week.

Maybe this photo taken in Greece of more traditional fishing techniques. I have to say I really enjoyed some of the produce of his labour on the menu of the local taverna

Or Derek William Dick, better known as Fish, former lead singer with the rock band Marillion, born in 1958 in Dalkeith, Midlothian. The band was originally known as Silmarillion after the J R R Tolkein book, but shortened it in 1981 to avoid a copyright suit. Rock and roll, eh?

I also thought about mentioning my local award winning fish and chip shop, but I won’t because I prefer Matt’s Plaice which I hope you can see on Streetview.

In the end, I decided to pop into Manchester and take some photos of the old Smithfield Fish Market opened on St Valentine’s Day 1873. Today only the facade remains, but with some fantastic fishing-themed embossed sculptures. Click to enlarge.
