If you’re ever invited to comment on a news story, my advice is don’t do it. You’re bound to say something stupid. Radio Five interviewed some locals in Stoke today following the arrest of several local young men suspected of plotting a terrorist attack.

One neighbour commented: “I’m not surprised. There’s not enough for young people to do.”

So keep bored teenagers off the streets by getting them to join the Young Terrorists’ League, or encouraging them to get their IED boy scout badge?

My gast has never been so flabbered.

I know the police have been very careful not to reveal the suspects’ “religious” leanings but if they needed something to do, couldn’t they have repainted the local mosque?
