Voice of America

Dragon AgeOverseas call centres are the bane of my life, especially when the person on the other end of the phone claims to be called Steve or Robert or somesuch when clearly that isn’t his given name.

I’ve sometimes thought about adding the subject to my occasional Life’s Little Irritants theme, but it too obvious a target even for my carping criticism, like shooting fish in a barrel.

But I had quite a unique experience recently, for me at least — a call centre based in the good old US of A.

I bought the game Dragon Age for my PC and was having trouble getting part of the program to work. I ended up calling the helpline and spoke to David S who had a broad American accent, although I’m not familiar enough with the accent to place exactly where from.

I then had to call them again a week or so later and this time spoke to Jeremy M who also had that Yankee twang.

Perhaps they just happen to be Americans working for a UK company I thought, but then saw the date and time stamp on the website confirmation of the queries, both eight hours adrift of BST so it seems this foreign call centre really is on the other side of the Atlantic.

For the record, they were very polite, wished me the very nicest of nice days, but I still haven’t got the game working properly.

I often find it really difficult to understand some of the more broad accents and that, I’m afraid, sometimes includes scottish accents. I suppose it would be easier if we were face to face – at least I could do some lip-reading. 🙂

The game Dragon Age for your PC? How old are you Ian? Thirteen?

Definitely not thirteen YP. The game clearly states 18+ on the cover to make sure no youngsters get their hands on it.
