The champagne corks are popping at Parrot Towers this morning as the posts on this blog now number in the thousands plural. This is officially my 2,000th post since my fingers first hit the keyboard on 28th August 2003.
As you can see if you read my historic first ramblings, I had no idea why I thought starting a blog was something I had to do and I can’t say that I’m any wiser today.
I suppose we began to blog simply because we could, in the same way that people tweet today. Back then my meanderings were hosted by Blogger which is still going strong and providing the same service for many of the blogs that I read today.
My old blog is still out there somewhere, but I switched to WordPress and self-hosting back in 2010 and the whole business of design and layout and the frustration of CSS and PHP coding.
4,497 days have passed since I began Shooting Parrots so I have averaged a little over three posts a week which isn’t bad when you take into account the occasional bout of bloggers block and two very hefty absences that together added up to three years of silence. My word count as of yesterday stands att 612,827, or about seven average novels which is a sobering thought.
But I’m afraid that you can put the party poppers away because this personal milestone of mine is bad news for world. You might recall back in 2012 that there was a bit of a hoo-ha about the End of the World on 21st December according to an ancient Mayan prophecy. It didn’t happen, of course, unless I was too wrapped up in myself to notice, but the doom-mongers missed one crucial stanza which mesoamerican experts have only recently translated:
And when the witterings of the parrot are myriad
As he perches among the trees
For the world this will be very bad
Just you wait and see
The word ‘myriad’ comes from the Mayan for 2,001 and the implication is that another post from me could very well bring about armageddon which would put a bit of a dampener on the festive celebrations.
Of course I could hold off from writing aany more until January for a small consideration. All major credit cards accepted – no post-dated cheques please.
