Eric 'Winkle' BrownHaving written about the life of Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown two days ago, I was taken by surprise by the news that there was a memorial service yesterday at Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton, the home of the Fleet Air Arm.

I had no idea that this was happening, so perhaps it was appropriate that my own modest memorial should appear the day before. See the Daily Mail to learn more.

You might be a loyal “Daily Mail” reader but I have an aversion to that newspaper so I am not following the link. I do not apologise for any offence this decision may cause.

It was a borrowed newspaper, but since you won’t follow the link, I can tell you that it would take you to a full-page article about Eric Brown. So that’s the Daily Mail following my lead which is rather worrying.

What’s all this nonsense of being frightened of newspapers – more it’s a need to identify with a newspaper that repeats everything that we believe in. Then we look down our nose, with some kind of inverted snobbery, at all those newspapers who don’t share our views and brand them as “loonies.” We do want to think that we’re right all the time, don’t we? All very silly, really.
